Champneys is a group of four residential spa resorts in England, with its flagship at Tring in the Hertfordshire countryside, within easy reach of London. It's best for UK-based guests who want a classic spa break with classes, treatments and structured retreats, from one night to longer stays.

What it's like

Champneys is a British institution. Its Tring resort, on Chesham Road in the Hertfordshire countryside, calls itself the UK's original health spa, and it's been welcoming guests since 1925. The setting is classic English country estate: gardens, quiet corners to sit and read, and the wider Tring Estate to walk in. It's close enough to London to arrive the same morning you leave the office.

Tring is the flagship, but there are three sister resorts: Henlow in Bedfordshire, Springs in Leicestershire and Forest Mere in Hampshire, in the South Downs. They share the same model, so you can pick whichever is easiest to reach. The World Spa Awards named Champneys England's best wellness retreat in 2025, and National Geographic included it among UK options for a Pilates-focused break in 2026.

At Tring, facilities include a hydropool, a relaxation room and a salt and oxygen detox room, along with a gym. Rooms range from standard, superior and luxe to suites and deluxe suites.

The programs

The easiest way in is a spa day or a spa break, where you book a stay and fill your days with classes and treatments. The class timetable is broad: aqua, cycling, dance, gym and fitness sessions, mind-body classes, outdoor activities and talks.

If you want more structure, Champneys runs four retreat collections:

  • Health, Fitness & Weight Loss, mixing exercise with nutrition and lifestyle education.
  • Restorative Retreats, aimed at rest and a gentle first step toward healthier habits.
  • Wellness Workshops, themed sessions to help you reset.
  • Yoga, Pilates & Meditation, a range of breaks built around mind-body practice, from calming to energizing.

Treatments cover massage, facials, body treatments, hands and feet, pregnancy and men's treatments, advanced therapies and spa rituals. Which retreats run at which resort changes through the year, so check dates before you book.

Food

Tring has a spa restaurant and a café, plus afternoon tea if you want a treat. Check what your booking includes before you go.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Champneys suits UK-based guests who want a familiar, well-run spa break without flying anywhere. It's a comfortable first retreat for people who aren't sure they're "retreat people," and the structured programs help if you want a push on fitness or weight.

It's less suited to anyone looking for a remote, back-to-nature experience or deep spiritual practice. It's a busy, sociable spa with day guests and members as well as residents.

Getting there

Champneys Tring is at Chesham Road, Tring, HP23 6HY. Trains run to both Tring and Berkhamsted, and taxis are available at both stations. By car, leave the A41 at the B4635 and follow signs via The Twist to Chesham Road.
