Esalen Institute is a nonprofit retreat center on the cliffs of Big Sur, California, founded in 1962 and famous as the home of the human potential movement. It suits adults who want to learn something in a multi-day workshop, then soak in hot springs above the Pacific.

What it's like

Esalen sits on a shelf of land between Highway 1 and the Pacific, about midway down the Big Sur coast. It was founded in 1962 and became known as the center of the human potential movement, and it's still run as a nonprofit educational institute. There's no cell signal, the ocean is always in view, and the whole campus is built around learning, bodywork and time outside.

The highlight for many people is the baths. Natural hot springs feed four large communal tubs and a row of individual tubs on the cliff edge, and you soak looking straight out at the sea. The baths are clothing optional, though nudity isn't required.

Outside featured Esalen twice in 2025, in a list of trips for a longer, healthier life and in a roundup of the most beautiful hot springs resorts in the US.

The programs

The main way to visit is to book a workshop. These run over several days, often a weekend, and cover a wide range: writing, mindfulness, movement, sound, nature-based ritual, mythology and more. The catalog changes constantly, so browse the current calendar.

If you'd rather go at your own pace, Esalen also offers self-guided explorations as an alternative to a set workshop. Massage is one of the things Esalen is best known for, and sessions should be booked in advance. There are scholarships, and a work scholar program lets people live and work on site in departments like the kitchen and the farm and garden.

Food and lodging

Meals are served buffet-style in the Lodge, with omnivore and vegan options and a farm-to-table approach. Alcohol is served only at dinner. Accommodation ranges from rustic to deluxe, priced together with workshop tuition, so check the accommodations page for current options. Camping isn't allowed.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Esalen is a great fit for curious adults who enjoy group learning, are comfortable in a communal setting and want a real break from screens. It suits solo travelers well.

It isn't a hotel, and you can't just drop by: visits need advance reservations, and there are no tours. Regular programs are adults-only. If you want room service, nightlife or reliable phone signal, look elsewhere.

Getting there

The nearest airports are Monterey (about 47 miles, roughly 75 minutes), San Jose (about 2.5 hours) and San Francisco (about 3 hours). Esalen's sign is at mile marker 32.4 on Highway 1, about ten miles north of Lucia. Highway 1 through Big Sur often has roadworks and closures, so check Esalen's travel advisory before you set off.
