Grail Springs is a small wellness retreat and spa on a spring-fed lake in Bancroft, Ontario, about 2.5 hours from Toronto and Ottawa. It's been running since 1993 and suits people who want quiet, plant-based food, spa treatments and gentle spiritual practice in the woods.

What it's like

Grail Springs is one of Canada's longer-running wellness retreats. It opened in 1993 as a privately owned retreat on former logging land just outside Bancroft, Ontario, a town that calls itself the Mineral Capital of Canada. Founder Madeleine Marentette designed the sanctuary, and the place still leans into that personal, spiritual feel.

The setting is the big draw. The property sits on the Canadian Shield beside a lake fed by hundreds of springs, with more than 100 acres of trails winding through forest. You'll find a meditation labyrinth modeled on the one at Chartres Cathedral, a garden prayer grotto, a crystal outcrop you can hike up to for meditation, a teepee, an outdoor sauna and a hot mineral soaking tub. Deer, loons, herons and the odd moose share the land, and there's a family of horses on site too.

It's a quiet, inward-looking kind of place. If you like the idea of evening meditation, forest walks and early nights, you'll settle in fast.

The programs

Most guests come for the all-inclusive Grail Foundation Retreat, which runs from 2 to 7 nights. It includes your wellness suite, morning movement, evening meditation and reflection, forest walks on Mondays and Saturdays, hot and cold plunges, the saunas and plant-based meals and snacks.

On top of that base, Grail Springs offers themed wellness journeys of 4 or 5 nights:

  • Cleanse and Renew, with daily cleansing treatments
  • Inner Healing, with daily healing treatments plus welcome and closing sessions
  • Nourish My Soul, a 5-night stay with extra spa treatments and workshops
  • Longevity and Living Well, a new 5-night program the site says launches in January 2027

There's also a day retreat with morning movement, lunch, the tea bar, the saunas and water circuit, and a spa credit. Through the year the calendar adds short events, such as a 3-day Peace Within retreat and a Power of Prayer retreat. Check the Grail Springs website for current dates.

The kitchen is fully plant-based, so don't expect a steak night. That's part of the point.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Grail Springs is a good match if you want a gentle, nurturing break with spa treatments, healthy food and some spiritual practice, without needing to fly anywhere far from southern Ontario. It works well for solo guests and for friends traveling together.

It's less suited to people looking for hard fitness training, nightlife or a big resort with lots of dining options. The spiritual language around crystals, prayer and energy won't be for everyone either, so read through the site to see if it speaks to you.

Getting there

Grail Springs is on Bay Lake Road in Bancroft. The drive takes about 2.5 hours from Toronto and about 2.5 to 3 hours from Ottawa, and around 1.25 hours from Belleville or Peterborough. Without a car, you can take VIA Rail to Belleville and book a taxi for the last hour.
