Talalla Retreat is a long-running beachfront retreat on a quiet cove near Sri Lanka's southern tip. It runs a week-long surf camp and a week-long wellness retreat every week of the year, so it suits solo travelers, couples and friends who want structured surf coaching or daily yoga without planning a schedule themselves.

What it's like

Talalla Retreat sits on a quiet cove at the bottom of Sri Lanka, on a 7-acre beachfront plot in Talalla South, near the village of Gandara. The beach here still sees far more local fishing boats than tourists, and the retreat makes a lot of that calm: you wake to the Indian Ocean, practice in open-air shalas, and spend the afternoon by the freshwater pool or on the sand.

The place has history. Building started before the 2004 tsunami hit the village, and founder Laurie Rose and friends raised money afterwards to help families rebuild. That support work turned into two community centers, and the retreat opened in 2005. Today most of the full-time staff come from the surrounding villages, which gives the place a settled, neighborly feel rather than a resort bubble.

Rooms range from garden rooms and sea-view villas to simple bamboo huts for a glamping-style stay. Many rooms have open-air marble bathrooms and private patios. Solar power heats the water, and an organic vegetable garden and compost system handle part of the kitchen's needs.

The programs

There are two core weeks, and both run every week of the year.

Surf camp. Camps run Sunday to Saturday, and you can add daily yoga by booking the Surf and Yoga version. Coaching is split into four levels plus a no-experience option, and each covers surf skills and ocean awareness. Intermediate and advanced groups stay small, with up to four surfers of a similar level. Custom surf trucks take you east or west along the coast to less crowded breaks picked for your level. You'll also get video review, theory sessions, boards and gear, and one massage. Afternoons are usually free. The retreat doesn't take drop-ins for the camp, and it suggests booking the full week.

Wellness retreat. This is a seven-night, eight-day program with daily yoga (aerial yoga included) and reformer Pilates, plus workshops, a sound healing session, a bathhouse visit with sauna, steam, cold plunge and a magnesium pool, a massage, and two e-bike tours: one to a Buddhist temple and one through the countryside with a guided meditation. Every session is optional, so you can do as much or as little as you like.

Beyond those, outside teachers bring their own groups to Talalla for hosted yoga and coaching retreats, and day passes are available if you're staying nearby.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Talalla works well if you want a structured week with the planning done for you. Surfers of any level get proper coaching, and yoga people get a choice of five shalas and a full spa. It's a sociable place, so solo travelers tend to find company easily.

It's less suited to anyone after nightlife or a big town on the doorstep. It's also worth knowing the main surf season here is roughly November to April, when weeks can fill months ahead.

Getting there

Most guests fly into Colombo and drive about three hours south to the retreat. Talalla offers private airport pick-ups and drop-offs, and Colombo city transfers too, so you don't need to sort your own driver. The address is Sampaya House, Talalla South, Gandara.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need surfing experience to join the surf camp?

No. There's a no-experience option and a beginner level, and coaches assess you at the start so you're placed in the right group.

When is the best time to surf at Talalla?

The camp runs all year, but the retreat describes peak season as roughly November to April. Bookings open up to 12 months ahead.
