Tierra de Sueños is a small eco lodge and wellness center in Playa Chiquita, about 6 km past Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast. It has seven hand-crafted bungalows in a garden full of fruit trees, plus yoga, massage, sauna and cold plunge, and it suits nature lovers, couples and yoga groups who don't need air conditioning.

What it's like

Tierra de Sueños sits between the rainforest and the beaches of Playa Chiquita, a quiet stretch of the Caribbean coast between Puerto Viejo and Punta Uva. It's a small place: seven hardwood bungalows built in a Caribbean style and spread through a garden thick with tropical plants. Each bungalow has its own theme, carried through in carved wood, tile mosaics, painted murals and other handmade details, so no two feel quite the same.

The lodge takes its green credentials seriously in a practical, low-key way. More than 20 fruit trees grow on the property, including papaya, starfruit, banana, avocado, mangosteen and cacao, and the team grows fruit and vegetables for guests. All organic waste is composted, there's filtered water for refilling bottles, and the builders kept tree cutting to a minimum, which is why some bungalows have trees growing up through the roof. Furniture was made by Costa Rican craftspeople, and the staff are local.

Expect wildlife. Howler monkeys, sloths, hummingbirds and butterflies are regular visitors, and so are frogs, lizards and the odd snake. There's no air conditioning; the lodge is upfront that guests who need it should look elsewhere, though it says the nights are cool enough for good sleep. Fiber internet covers the common areas.

The programs

Yoga is part of everyday life here. All-levels hatha vinyasa classes run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and private sessions can be arranged on request. The lodge also offers a personal yoga retreat option for individuals who'd like a more structured stay.

The wellness menu goes beyond yoga. You can book open-air Thai massage, deep tissue, Swedish, aromatherapy, cranial sacral therapy and reiki. There's an infrared sauna and a cold plunge kept at a bracing 3 to 5°C, which is quite a contrast to the Caribbean heat.

Tierra de Sueños also hosts outside retreats. It can sleep up to 18 guests, with extra lodging for leaders and assistants, and has workshop space for 25. For groups, the kitchen serves three vegetarian meals a day made with locally sourced ingredients, and other options are available on request. If you're a teacher looking for a small, characterful venue on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, it's worth a look.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits people who like to be close to nature and don't mind a gecko on the wall. Couples, solo travelers and families all fit well. Playa Chiquita has calm, shallow tide pools, and the lodge has family casitas for four to six people, plus a crib and extra mattress for kids. Small yoga and wellness groups get the place largely to themselves.

If you need air conditioning, a big pool or resort-style service, you'll be happier elsewhere. It's also not a party base, although the bars and restaurants of Puerto Viejo are only a few kilometers away.

Getting there

Most people fly into San José and take a door-to-door shuttle, which takes about five hours; the lodge names Caribe Shuttle and Interbus and asks you to email them to coordinate times. The public MEPE bus from downtown San José takes about six hours to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (not Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí), then a short taxi ride. You can also rent a car, or fly to Limón with Sansa and take a shuttle for the last hour.

Once you're there, bikes, tuk tuks, scooters, taxis and local buses make it easy to get around. Punta Uva is about 2 km away, Manzanillo about 8 km.
