Aro Hā is a small, purpose-built wellness retreat in the Southern Alps at Glenorchy, about 45 minutes from Queenstown, New Zealand. It's best for active people who want a structured week of mountain hiking, yoga, plant-based food and real time offline.
What it's like
Aro Hā sits in the mountains at Glenorchy, at the head of the valley beyond Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island. The retreat was purpose-built using Passivhaus techniques, a strict building standard for energy efficiency, and it's run on permaculture principles with a plant-to-plate kitchen. The look is simple and Zen-inspired, with wooden buildings set against big alpine views.
The experience is structured. Everyone arrives together on a Sunday, follows a full daily program in a small group and leaves together at the end. You're encouraged to treat it as a week offline: rooms have internet, but there's no Wi-Fi in the shared spaces, and the team suggests a proper tech detox. You still choose your own path each day, so you can shorten a hike or swap a class for time in the spa.
The programs
- Revive & Thrive. The core program comes in two lengths, a 7-day Signature and a 5-day Essential. Both follow the same approach, mixing yoga, breathwork, guided hiking, Pilates, meditation, contrast hydrotherapy and good sleep habits.
- Specialty retreats. A few times a year, guest teachers lead themed weeks. Upcoming examples on the website include retreats focused on nutrition and positive psychology, Vedic meditation and everyday healthy living.
Hikes go into subalpine country, including World Heritage parkland, and can involve crossing glacial rivers. Every full day includes a massage, and you get round-the-clock access to the Obsidian spa, with saunas, a cold plunge and a hot tub. Each stay starts with a one-on-one check-in, and extra treatments such as acupuncture are available.
Food
All meals and snacks are included. The menu is gluten-free and plant-based, built on organic whole foods, with an optional ketosis-based cleanse if you want to go further. Guests are asked not to bring their own food, drinks or alcohol, and the retreat suggests cutting back on caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes the week before you arrive to ease any detox headaches.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
Aro Hā is a great fit for active people who like being outdoors and want a clear structure rather than an open-ended spa stay. It works well for solo travelers, since the group program does the social work for you. The retreat recommends a moderate level of fitness, though hikes can be shortened.
It's not for children: guests must be 16 or older. It's also not the place if you want to come and go as you please, keep working or enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.
Getting there
Fly into Queenstown. There are direct flights of about three hours from Australia's major east coast cities, and travelers from North America and Europe usually connect through Auckland or Sydney. Transfers are included on arrival day, leaving Queenstown Airport around midday or downtown Queenstown at 12:30 pm, and the drive takes about 45 minutes. On the last day, you're back in Queenstown by midday.
The weather in the mountains changes fast, so pack layers plus sun, wind and rain protection. Rain gear and hiking poles are provided.
The World Spa Awards named Aro Hā New Zealand's best wellness retreat for 2025.
