La Selva Ecolodge

Amazon Retreat by Yasuni National Park

By Retreat Vacations Editors · Checked · 3 min readVisit official website

La Selva is a lakeside ecolodge in Ecuador's Amazon, on the edge of Yasuni National Park, reached by flight, motor canoe and paddle canoe. It suits nature lovers who want guided wildlife trips with yoga, spa time and holistic retreat programs mixed in.

What it's like

La Selva sits on the shore of Lake Garzacocha in Ecuador's Amazon, inside the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve and right beside Yasuni National Park. There are no roads in, and that's a big part of the appeal. It was one of the first Amazon rainforest lodges in Ecuador, and today it describes itself as a carbon-neutral ecolodge and a Certified B Corporation, now owned by Golden Experiences and Travel.

The lodge has 19 staterooms. Fifteen are panoramic rooms perched above the lake, each with a private balcony, a rainforest shower and a seating area. Four family rooms sleep up to 4 and come with a porch, hammock and hot tub. There's no air conditioning, on purpose: large windows, ceiling fans and mosquito nets keep things comfortable, and you'll fall asleep to jungle sounds instead of a hum.

Meals are served in the main restaurant overlooking the lake, mixing international cooking with Ecuadorian ingredients.

The programs

Most guests come for the wildlife. With English-speaking naturalists and Indigenous guides, you can canoe and kayak the lake, walk forest trails by day and night, climb canopy towers and visit local Indigenous communities. The lodge says the area is home to more than 600 bird species, so bring binoculars.

For a more inward stay, La Selva runs Holistic Retreat programs of 3 nights and 4 nights. They combine river trips and intention-setting rituals with yoga, cacao ceremonies, forest treks, a community visit and closing rituals. Yoga sessions suit all levels and happen overlooking the lagoon or in the forest, and daily sessions are available on request at no extra cost.

The spa offers more than ten treatments, from Amazon ritual baths to massages and facials, plus whirlpool baths. You can find current programs on the La Selva website.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

La Selva is a good fit if you want the real Amazon with a comfortable bed, good food and a bit of wellness at the end of a long day outdoors. Families are well catered for with the larger rooms, and couples will like the balconies over the lake.

It's not for anyone who needs air conditioning, quick access to town or a short travel day. Getting there takes most of a day, and the rhythm revolves around early starts and guided outings.

Getting there

From Quito, you fly about 30 minutes to Coca (Francisco de Orellana). A La Selva team member meets you, and you travel about 2 hours by motorized canoe along the Napo River. From the lodge's dock, a short jungle walk leads to a creek, where a hand-paddled canoe takes you across Garzacocha Lagoon to the lodge. Plan on 4 to 5 hours from Quito in total.
