Rancho Margot is a self-sufficient ranch and eco lodge in a valley near El Castillo, on the edge of Costa Rica's Arenal area. It suits travelers, families and students who want rainforest, daily yoga and a hands-on look at off-grid, chemical-free farming.

What it's like

Rancho Margot is a working ranch first and a place to stay second, and that's what makes it interesting. Founder Juan Sostheim bought this valley in 2004, when it was overgrazed pasture surrounded by thousands of acres of protected forest. Today the property covers more than 420 acres and runs on closed loops for energy, water and waste. Power comes from an on-site hydro system, with a diesel generator kept for emergencies, and agrochemicals have been banned from the start. The official website describes it as an off-grid, regenerative community with education at its heart.

Expect a busy, lived-in place rather than a hushed spa. There are organic gardens, cows, pigs and chickens, spring-fed pools, rainforest trails, a fishing pond and a restaurant serving food grown on the ranch. The ranch also has long ties with nearby El Castillo village, from school transport to weekly English classes.

The programs

Yoga runs twice daily, morning and afternoon, in an open-air shala. Beyond that, most of what you'll do here is about the land:

  • Ranch Tour: a guided 2-hour walk through the farm and its systems, run several times a day
  • Sustainable Living Immersion: a 6-night minimum program with three hours a day of hands-on work alongside staff in the gardens, animal care and permaculture, plus workshops on soap making, cheese making, composting, microorganisms and farm-to-table cooking, with daily yoga included
  • Spanish immersion, listed alongside the sustainability program
  • Volunteering, for longer stays
  • Hikes, wildlife watching, night walks and massage, with horse riding, kayaking and the pools reserved for overnight guests

Meals are mostly buffet style. Breakfast can include rice and beans, eggs, plantains, fruit, granola and yogurt, and lunch and dinner bring things like brick-oven pizza, a salad bar, grains and vegetables. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available if you ask ahead.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Rancho Margot is a good fit for families, student groups, solo travelers and anyone curious about how a self-sufficient farm actually works. Yoga is a pleasant daily thread rather than the main event.

Rooms range widely. The Bungalow Deluxe sleeps up to 4 and has a wraparound terrace, the Bungalow Superior is set up for one adult, the Field House is a budget-friendly 20-room bunkhouse with shared bathrooms, and there's a two-story rental house with a kitchen. If you want silence, fast internet or a luxury spa, look elsewhere: wifi is limited to common areas and is slow given the rainforest location.

Getting there

The ranch is about 28 km from La Fortuna, roughly a 40-minute drive, and about 3 km from El Castillo, which has more shops, cafes and restaurants. Most of the road is paved. The last 2.5 km is rough gravel, but the ranch says a regular car can manage it slowly and a 4x4 isn't required.

Frequently asked questions
