Pacuare Lodge

Costa Rica's best eco-lodges and retreats for adventure

By Retreat Vacations Editors · Checked · 5 min read

For pure adventure, Pacuare Lodge is the standout: you raft in on the Pacuare River and spend your days canyoning and hiking. Lapa Rios is the pick for rainforest wildlife on the Osa Peninsula, and Rancho Margot near Lake Arenal suits families who want kayaking, riding and a working off-grid farm. The rest of this list adds yoga and rest to the mix.

We first published this guide in 2014 as a list of adventure hotels. The 2026 update refocuses it on eco-lodges and retreats, picking the Costa Rica places on our site where getting outdoors is a real part of the stay, with somewhere calm to come back to at night.

How we chose

We went through every Costa Rica profile on our site and kept the lodges and retreats whose official sites offer outdoor adventure on the property or arrange it from the door: rivers, rainforest trails, wildlife, horses, waterfalls or surf. We checked each one in October 2026. The list is grouped by the kind of adventure, and the order isn't a ranking. Some of these places hold Costa Rica's Sustainable Tourism Certificate or make their own renewable power, which we note where the lodge says so.

Rivers and rainforest: Pacuare Lodge

At Pacuare Lodge, getting there is part of the adventure. There's no ordinary road in. Most guests raft down the Pacuare River for an hour or two and step off the boat at the lodge. When the river's too high, a 4x4 takes about 45 minutes instead.

The all-in package covers a canopy tour and tropical canyoning, bird-watching, a hike with members of the local Cabécar Indigenous community and a trail walk to a waterfall. Evenings are comfortable, with teak-floored suites, a pool and a spa. The lodge runs on small hydro turbines and solar panels, and it holds the ELITE level of Costa Rica's Sustainable Tourism Certificate. Children can stay from age 7, but rafting has higher minimum ages: 9 to raft in and 12 to raft out. The lodge suggests three nights.

Wildlife on the Osa Peninsula

The Osa is one of the wildest corners of Costa Rica, and Corcovado National Park is the big draw.

Lapa Rios sits inside its own 1,000-acre rainforest reserve near Cabo Matapalo, a buffer for Corcovado. Eight guided walks and experiences are included, such as an early bird walk and a waterfall hike, and there are more than 20 paid add-ons: Corcovado trips by boat or on foot, kayaking, waterfall rappelling, dolphin and whale watching, horseback riding and night walks. The lodge says sloths, scarlet macaws and all four of Costa Rica's monkey species turn up regularly. Book Corcovado permits early, because they're limited.

Ojo del Mar is a small beachfront lodge at Cabo Matapalo with daily yoga, wildlife walks and surf breaks nearby. It's off-grid and simple, a good fit if you'd rather trade polish for a beach and a rainforest.

Blue Osa near Puerto Jiménez balances adventure with a proper yoga retreat. You can surf, paddleboard, hike to waterfalls or join wildlife tours, and sea turtles nest nearby from July to December.

La Cusinga sits farther north near Uvita, bordering Marino Ballena National Park, on a 242-hectare private forest reserve. Its trails lead to a natural forest pool and down to Playa Arco, a small cove in the park, and the lodge arranges day trips to Corcovado and Caño Island. It's a great base for birders.

Volcano country: Rancho Margot

Rancho Margot is a self-sufficient ranch of more than 420 acres near El Castillo, on the edge of the Arenal area, surrounded by protected forest. Overnight guests can ride horses, kayak and use the spring-fed pools, and there are rainforest trails and night walks. Yoga runs twice a day in an open-air shala.

What makes it different is the farm itself. The ranch runs on its own hydro power, has banned agrochemicals from the start and offers a Sustainable Living Immersion with hands-on work in the gardens and with the animals. It's a great choice for families and curious travelers. The last 2.5 km is rough gravel, but the ranch says you don't need a 4x4.

Nicoya Peninsula: reserves and the surf coast

Star Mountain is a four-room lodge on a 90-hectare private reserve above Mal Pais, near Cabo Blanco. A 3 km private loop trail with three lookouts starts in front of the rooms, horseback tours leave from the lodge, and capuchin and howler monkeys, coatis and plenty of birds are common. It's dry-season only, closed from April through October, you'll need a 4x4 and it doesn't serve meals.

Anamaya above Montezuma is mainly a yoga retreat, but reception books surf lessons, canopy tours, horseback rides, hikes, snorkeling, scuba diving and sea kayaking. It suits people who want daily yoga with an adventure every other day. Anamaya shares an owner with this site, and it's included on the same terms as every other pick.

Caribbean rainforest and the central Pacific

Samasati covers 250 acres of hillside rainforest above Puerto Viejo, about 80% of it a private biological reserve. Guided nature walks, waterfall hikes and birdwatching happen on the property, and shuttles run down to the beaches and surf.

Vida Asana near Playa Hermosa is a yoga center in riverside rainforest that offers surfing, waterfall and nature hikes, canopy tours and mountain biking. It's about 90 minutes by road from San José's international airport.

Planning your route

These lodges are spread across the country, and roads in Costa Rica take longer than the map suggests. Pick one or two regions rather than trying to see everything. For help with routes, transfers and timing, our sister site Costa Rica Journeys covers travel around the country.
